Our loved ones are people that we look up to and cherish. Life is busy, and it can be easy to forget to make time for the people we care about. It’s a daunting and upsetting feeling that they won’t be around forever. Creating memories whilst they're still here means you’ll have something to look back on to make you smile. Here are some ways to make memorable moments:
Go On an Adventure Together Many people can feel lonely due to reasons such as being home often or losing their own loved ones over time. Going outside and spending time with them gives them the opportunity to socialise and do something different. There are many places to visit around the UK like parks, pubs, zoos, cinemas, theatres and museums.
Ask them if there’s anywhere in particular that they want to go. Remember that they have limits; they may have mobility issues or can’t walk as far anymore. When you’re out together, remember to put your phone away – quality time is important. Living in the moment is the key to making memories last forever.
Do Something Fun Inside Going out is fun, but if it’s raining outside or you’re feeling lazy, staying inside might sound appealing. There’s plenty that you and your loved one can do at your house or theirs. Get out some games like Connect Four, Jenga, Ludo or cards and enjoy getting competitive. If you just want to relax, you could put on your favourite childhood film and watch it together. You could also create something together. For example, you might bake a sweet treat in the kitchen – maybe a particular flavour of cake you enjoyed as a child. If you’re both creative, you could make a scrapbook of your favourite memories together. This is the perfect way of making new memories whilst revisiting old ones.
Understanding Their Story Your loved ones may be older than you. They’d have lived through life events that you didn’t and probably have some life advice you could learn from. Around Christmas, a book went viral on TikTok which is full of questions for your elderly loved ones to answer. You’re meant to give the book to them, let them write down their answers to the questions, and then they have to give the book back to you. This is a creative way of learning about their life, and having the answers written down means you can look back on them. If you do a filmed interview, this is also something that you and other family members can look back on. Or, you could simply have a casual conversation about their life over a cup of tea.
Show Them That You Care Letting one know that you appreciate them will put a huge smile on their face. To do this, you might surprise them with something. This could be something you’ve created yourself, like their favourite meal or a handwritten note. A gift doesn’t have to be expensive; something like a box of store-bought cookies can go a long way. This can create a memory because you’ll remember how their face lit up when you gave them the gift. You could tell them you appreciate them in words by explaining a time that they made you smile. Words can go a long way in showing someone you care. Another way to show you care is by sending regular texts and making phone calls to check in. This is especially useful if you don’t get to see your loved one in person very often. If they live alone, this is a great way to help them socialise and feel seen. Asking them about their day shows them that someone is excited to listen to what they have to say.
It’s essential to really appreciate the people around us and create as many memories as we can. If you haven’t got any plans already, go and make some; it’s time to create new memories!
